Tigers Hang On For 4-3 Victory Over NC State Saturday Afternoon

CLEMSON, SC – The 21st-ranked Tiger women’s tennis team won a 4-3 decision over #36 NC State at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. Clemson led 3-0 in the match before the Wolfpack knotted the score and forced the deciding match-up at the flight three position. Federica van Adrichem claimed a three-set thriller to seal the victory for the Tigers.

Clemson now boasts a 14-6 ledger with a 7-5 mark against ACC opponents, while NC State dropped to 15-7 overall, 4-6 in the conference.

Van Adrichem, ranked #56, won the first set of her match, 7-6(4), against Alejandra Guerra before falling in the second by a 6-4 margin. She then broke Guerra’s serve to claim the first point of the third set. Guerra tied the score at 2-2 but was unable to record another point as van Adrichem won the set, 6-2, for her 20th victory of the year.

The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles contests for the sixth time this season. At the top slot, the ninth-ranked team of Carol Salge and van Adrichem defeated Barbara Orlay and Shona Lee, 8-3, while Maria Brito and Marie Scriba won by an 8-2 margin over Nandita Chandrasekar and Neils Barringer in the flight three match-up. Clemson’s duo of Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc improved its doubles team record to 13-5 with an 8-4 win over Julia Roach and Alejandra Guerra at flight two.

Brito picked up the Tigers’ second point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Roach at flight four, and Salge’s 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Orlay at the number one position then gave Clemson a 3-0 lead. The Wolfpack fought back, winning matches at flights two, five and six to tie the score. Lee defeated Alvarez at the flight two slot, while Chandrasekar claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Luc at flight five. Clemson’s Kathi Gerber then fell to Barringer by a score of 6-3, 6-4 in the flight six match-up.

The Tigers return to action on Sunday, Apr. 16 for the regular season final. The team will honor its lone senior, Alvarez, prior to the 12:00 PM match against Wake Forest.
