LAS VEGAS, NV – Clemson fought back for the second straight game to hand Oregon State a 9-5 loss at UNLV’s Wilson Stadium.
The Tigers overcame a 6-1 deficit on Thursday by scoring nine runs in the final two innings to beat UNLV 10-6. Clemson needed a seven-run sixth inning to get past the Beavers in the first game Friday.
The Tigers scored seven times on seven hits in the sixth inning to overcome a 4-2 Oregon State lead. The rally started on a double by sophomore right fielder Kyle Frank. Chad Coder singled followed by a walk by Zane Green singled to score both Frank and Coder. Seth Miller, Ryan Riley and Casey Stone all singled before Oregon State turned a double play for the first outs of the inning. When the Tigers batted around Frank had his second hit of the inning, a single that scored Riley and Jeff Baker. Coder popped up to end the inning.
Sophomore Jarrod Schmidt got in the win column with his first win of the year (1-1). He went 5 2/3 innings giving up six hits and five runs, all of which were earned. Matt Henrie came on in relief in the sixth inning to finish the game. Henrie allowed just three hits to pick up the save. Beavers’ starter Thad Johnson was pegged with his first loss of the year.
Clemson scored first in the second inning when first baseman Michael Johhnson went deep over the fence in right-centerfield to also score Coder. The Beavers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead in the fourth when two of the first three batters singled. Zach Gordon singled to score Chris Biles. Josh Howard scored on a sacrifice fly to deep right field to give Oregon State a 4-2 lead.
Stone was a perfect in his four plate appearances on the day with a double and three singles. He also had one RBI and a stolen base. The Tigers improved to 4-1 on the year with the aid of 12 hits against Oregon State, while the Beavers dropped to 4-4.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 1:00 PM and on Sunday at 2:00 PM. Clemson will play UNLV late Friday night.
