Tigers Fall to Top-Ranked Tar Heels Sunday

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team fell to the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, North Carolina, by a score of 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the indoor courts at Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C. With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 12-11 (5-7 ACC), while the Tar Heels improved to 22-2 (11-1).

The Tar Heels won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point, and took a 2-0 lead in the match with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles. At No. 1 singles, Marie-Alexandre Leduc, ranked 19th nationally, lost her first set in a tiebreak to 18th-ranked Makenna Jones, and ultimately lost the match, 7-6(3), 6-3. Ally Miller-Krasilnikov played well after moving up to No. 4 in the singles lineup, ultimately losing a hard-fought three-set match to 79th-ranked Jessie Aney, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Fernanda Navarro also battled at No. 2 singles for the Tigers, where she faced Alle Sanford, the 25th-ranked player in the nation, and fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. North Carolina won at No. 5 and 6 singles to complete the sweep.

The Tigers conclude the regular season with two road ACC matches next weekend. On Friday, April 20, they face 21st-ranked Virginia in Charlottesville at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, they travel to Atlanta to take on second-ranked Georgia Tech at 2 p.m.
