CARY, N.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team fell to Notre Dame 4-1 in the second round of the ACC Championships in Cary, N.C. on Thursday. With today’s win, the Irish avenged a 4-3 regular-season home loss to the Tigers just two weeks ago. Clemson fell to 10-10 overall with the loss, while Notre Dame is now 14-12.
Clemson’s Joana Eidukonyte and Fernanda Navarro, ranked 51st nationally, won their No. 1 doubles match 6-0 over their 38th-ranked opponent from Notre Dame. The Irish won on courts 2 and 3 to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
The Irish won first sets on four singles courts, 1, 2, 4 and 5, but the Tigers rebounded and won the second set on all four courts, and seemed to have the momentum. Daniela Ruiz then tied the match at 1-1 with a straight-set win at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3, before Notre Dame regained the momentum, and claimed the win with victories on courts 4, 1 and 5, in that order.
The Tigers will now await word on a possible NCAA Tournament bid. The NCAA selection show is on Tuesday, May 3 at 5 p.m. ET.
