Rome, Ga. — Clemson (9-15, 3-10 ACC) fell, 4-2, to Virginia Tech (7-16, 0-10 ACC) in the opening round of the conference tournament.
The Tigers earned the doubles decision with wins on all three courts. At No. 2, No. 38 Ali DeSpain and Laura Marti picked up a 6-3 win while Sophia Hatton/Cristina Mayorova and Mackenzy Middlebrooks/Eleni Louka each won, 6-3, at lines one and three, respectively.
In singles, the Tigers were off to a hot start with first-set wins on four courts. No. 61 Eleni Louka extended the Clemson lead to 2-0, downing Tamara Barad Itzhaki, 6-1, 6-4, on Court 1. However, the Hokies surged back to earn four consecutive wins, clinching on Court 6, to earn the victory and advance to the second round of the tournament.
