Tigers Edged by Orange on the Road, 4-3

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Clemson women’s tennis team’s attempt at a come-from-behind road win came up short on Friday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y., as the Tigers fell 4-3 to the Orange. With the loss, Clemson dropped to 5-8 (2-4 ACC), while Syracuse improved to 4-7 (2-3 ACC).

Ayan Broomfield and Marie-Alexandre Leduc got the Tigers out to a quick start with a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles. The Orange won the next two doubles matches, however, at No. 3 and No. 2 in that order, to claim the team doubles point.

Broomfield continued her dominant play in singles, winning her match on Court 1, 6-1, 6-0, to tie the team score at 1-1. After Syracuse picked up a win at No. 2, freshman Constanza Gorches knotted the score at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, her fourth win in a row. The Orange pulled ahead again with a victory at No. 6, before Leduc tied it with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 3 singles, leaving the result to the match on Court 4. Freshman Sydney Riley, who won the first set and lost the second, was down 1-5 in the third set before she came all the way back to tie the score at 5-5, and then force a tiebreak before falling.

The Tigers return to Clemson on Sunday, March 19 to host Pittsburgh in a 12 p.m. contest at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
