Tigers Drop Five-Set Battle at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Clemson volleyball team (12-14, 3-11 ACC) had four players finish with double-digit kills, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers fell to Miami (16-9, 9-5 ACC) in five sets. Junior Camryn Hannah led the team with 18 kills as Mia McGrath (14), Cate Long (12) and Ani Clark (10) rounded out the four. Defensively, Devan Taylor had 19 digs while McGrath added 16, and Clark finished with seven blocks.

Clemson strung together big scoring runs in the first set that included Clark and Hannah combining for two blocks, and McGrath and Mckenna Slavik serving aces. Miami responded to even the score at 13-all. The Tigers regained the lead with kills from McGrath, Colleen Finney and Long. Down the stretch, a kill from Clark followed by a block from Long and Finney sealed the 25-19 set victory.

Miami responded in the second set with a 25-14 win to tie things at a set a piece. Hannah responded for the Tigers early in the third set, clocking five kills within a seven-point scoring stretch. McGrath and Long tallied kills of their own before Clark brought the power at the net by picking up three block assists and a kill. Hannah continued to dominate the Clemson offense as she clocked nine kills in the third set alone. Long gave the Tigers the 27-25 set victory with an ace.

In the fourth set, Finney combined with Hannah and Long for two early block assists to get Clemson going. The Hurricanes responded with a string of points to take a 16-11 lead, but the Tigers clawed their way back with kills from Long, Finney and Clark. Long tied things at 21 with an ace. Despite coming back, Miami went on a four-point scoring run to take the set 25-21 to force a deciding set.

Miami went on a five-point scoring run to open the fifth. Long and Slavik tallied kills to cut the Hurricanes lead down to three points as the two teams traded sides. Clemson battled back after two kills from McGrath. The Tigers went on a four-point scoring run to stay alive, but Miami was able to get one final kill to end the match with a 15-12 set victory.

The Tigers return to Jervey Gym on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. to host Miami on ACCNX. Clemson will also host NC State on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. Next weekend will serve as Clemson Volleyball’s Alumni Weekend.
