Tigers Dominate Terriers

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Clemson women’s soccer team defeated the Wofford Terriers 5-1 on Monday evening at Snyder Field in Spartanburg. Salma Anastasio netted two goals in the match to lead the Tigers in scoring.

Alana Hockenhull broke the ice for the Tigers in the 20th minute when a shot by Abby Jones rebounded off the keeper and found Hockenhull’s foot to put the Tigers up 1-0. It was her second goal in two straight games.

In the 29th minute, Anastasio found the net for the first time in the game on a long pass from Claire Wagner that was chipped over the keeper to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Wofford scored in the 32nd minute to cut the Clemson lead in half, but Katie Sprouse responded with her first goal of the season on a long throw from Samantha Staab that she flicked over the keeper.

Anastasio found the net again in the 62nd minute to extend Clemson’s lead to 4-1 on a pass from Catrina Atanda.

In the 84th minute, Staab connected with Miranda Weslake who headed the ball into the net for the first goal of her Clemson career.

Head Coach Eddie Radwanski was once again proud of the way his team competed the entire game, particularly against a Wofford team that the Tigers faced at Historic Riggs Field last year and narrowly defeated 1-0.

“We came with the right focus and determination in this game, and I really liked how we lifted our game in the second half. We created activity in the box and it’s always nice to score a bunch of goals.”

He also applauded the way Anastasio has put in the extra work needed.

“Salma has been a bit unlucky in a couple of our games and has put herself in really good position, but goalkeepers have made some outstanding saves to keep the ball out of the net. My message to her was to keep doing the little things, and she did and was rewarded for that tonight.”

Clemson returns to Historic Riggs Field on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. for a match against Penn and again on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. as it faces USF. As always, admission is free to all regular season home games.
