Tigers Defeat VCU 4-3 in Women’s Tennis Action Friday

Richmond, VA – The 16th-ranked Tiger women’s tennis squad narrowly defeated the #61 Virginia Commonwealth Rams on Friday afternoon by a score of 4-3. With the win, Clemson improved to 5-4 overall while the Rams fell to 6-3. Clemson won the doubles point and Julie Coin, Romy Farah and Daniela won singles matches for the victory.

The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Coin and Farah defeated Cristina Arribas and Olga Borisova at the No.1 position, 8-2, and Ioana Paun and Carol Salge teamed up for the victory over Vera Petrashevitch and Viktoria Konstantinova in the No.3 contest, 8-4. The Rams’ Marianna Yuferova and Alexa Korotkevich won a close match in the No.2 slot, defeating Clemson’s Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito by a score of 9-8(5).

Coin, ranked number three by the ITA, easily defeated Marianna Yuferova in the top singles contest (6-2, 6-2) to extend her winning streak to eight matches. She is now 17-2 overall. At the No.2 position, the Tigers’ Brito fell to Borisova by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Farah edged VCU’s Arribas at the No.3 slot, 7-5, 7-5, while Clemson Alvarez was victorious over Viktoria Konstantinova in the No.4 match-up, 6-2, 6-3. The Rams took the No. 5 and No.6 contests as Vera Petrashevitch defeated Salge (2-6, 7-5, 6-1) and Alexa Korotkevich defeated Paun, 6-2, 6-7(6), 10-3.

The Tigers face the Tribe of William & Mary, ranked 26th in the latest ITA poll, on Sunday in Williamsburg, VA. The teams are scheduled to take to the court at 11:00 am.
