Tigers Defeat UAB in Exhibition Saturday at Riggs

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s soccer team kicked off its exhibition season with a 2-0 win over UAB at Historic Riggs Field Saturday night. The teams played three 30 minute periods and ended the game with a round of penalty kicks.

Junior TJ Casner got the scoring started off for the Tigers in the 21st minute. Casner found the back of the net off a free kick from 20 yards out on the left side.

Senior Manolo Sanchez scored Clemson’s second goal of the evening in the 34th minute. Freshman Oliver Shannon crossed the ball from the right side of the pitch to the end line, where Sanchez was waiting at the left post. He headed it in just past UAB goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky.  

Junior Chris Glodack and sophomore Andrew Tarbell combined for a shutout in goal with eight saves, with Glodack playing 60 minutes and Tarbell playing 30.

Clemson won the penalty kick round by a count of 5-3 with makes by Casner, sophomore Iman Mafi, sophomore Thales Moreno, graduate student Bobby Belair and senior Phanuel Kavita. Belair and Kavita also serve as team captains. 

Clemson hits the road next weekend for the second and final exhibition contest. The team travels to UNC Asheville on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. The Tigers begin the regular season on Friday, Aug. 29 when they host Radford.
