Tigers Complete Day Two of Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s tennis team continued its solid play on the second day of the Clemson Invitational, registering a doubles win courtesy of Trey Stinchcomb and Matt Pitts and six overall singles victories. The day was highlighted by a sweep of three straight wins for Stinchcomb.

The Tigers split doubles in the morning as Whitaker and Smith dropped the match to Presbyterian’s Benson and Milanovic, but Stinchcomb and M. Pitts gave the Tigers momentum heading into singles as they defeated Charlotte’s Dreycopp and Gloria, 7-5.

Four of six Tigers opened the day with singles wins as M. Pitts, Stinchcomb, Max Smith and Ethan Silva all came out victorious on their respective courts, taking down opponents from Auburn, Charlotte and Wisconsin.

Stinchcomb continued to play solid tennis for the Tigers as he defeated Wisconsin’s Schwartz 7-5, 7-6 while Smith beat Presbyterian’s Max Benson 6-2, 6-3 to go 3-0 in the first two days of play. M. Pitts, Silva, Whitaker and T. Pitts dropped their matches in the afternoon.

“It was a long, tough day of tennis for the boys,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “We had a couple of injuries along with some spotty play in the afternoon, but there were some bright spots. Max Smith has done a great job making it to the finals of his flight and going 3-0 in singles thus far. We are in a better spot this early in the season than where we were last fall. We have a lot of work to do, but I am confident that we will make some significant gains this fall and be ready to battle in the spring. Excited to watch the boys compete hard tomorrow morning and finish strong.”

The Tigers return for the final day of the Clemson Invitational tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility.
