CLEMSON, S.C. – The 14th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team defeated #40 Purdue 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-0 on the season, and secure their spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. on Feb. 5-8. It is the second consecutive season that Head Coach Nancy Harris’ Tigers have qualified for the prestigious indoor meet.
Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies, ranked second in the nation in doubles, defeated Purdue’s top doubles team 6-1 to get the day started. Yuilynn Miao and Daniela Ruiz then clinched the doubles point for the Tigers with a 6-3 win at flight three.
Romy Koelzer, ranked 85th by the ITA in singles, gave Clemson a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over 118th-ranked Daniela Vidal at flight one. Shortly after Koelzer’s win, Gumulya and Rompies won at flight two and four, respectively, to clinch the team victory. Tristen Dewar finished out the match with a victory at flight three to provide the 5-0 final team score.
Before the Tigers head to Charlottesville for ITA Indoors, they have two important home matches next weekend. Clemson hosts #10 Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. and #23 South Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
