NASHVILLE, TN – The 13th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team fell to #6 Vanderbilt on Friday afternoon in Nashville by a score of 6-1. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 4-1 on the season, while the Commodores improve to 8-1.
In doubles play, Clemson’s team of Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito won an 8-5 decision over 28th-ranked Audra Falk and Annie Menees at flight two. The Tigers’ team of Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts, currently ranked in a tie for 49th by the ITA, fell to Vanderbilt’s second-ranked team of Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos, 8-0, at number one doubles. At flight three, Clemson’s Julie Coin and Silvia Gutierrez dropped an 8-6 decision to Amanda Fish and Ashley Schellhas.
The Tigers’ Coin, ranked ninth by the ITA in singles, defeated #39 Falk by a score of 6-1, 6-4 at flight one. Alvarez (#40) lost a 6-1, 6-2 decision to #94 Schmandt at two singles, while Brito (#78) dropped a three-set decision (6-3, 6-7(0), 1-0(10-7)) to Tsoubanos at the number three position. At flight four, Rombouts fell to #66 Fish (6-4, 6-3), while LeSaldo lost a 7-6(1), 6-3 decision to #77 Schellhas at flight five. Clemson’s Gutierrez fell to Menees by a score of 6-3, 6-1 at number six singles.
Clemson will face Iowa (5-0) in Nashville on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The match between the Tigers and the Hawkeyes will be held at the Brownlee O. Currey Junior Tennis Complex on Vanderbilt’s campus.
