March 25, 2007

CLEMSON, SC – The seventh-ranked Clemson women’s team was edged by ninth-ranked Miami, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The loss ended the Tigers’ seven-match winning streak and dropped them to 12-3 overall with a 4-1 mark in the ACC.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes improved to 13-3 on the year and 4-1 in conference play.

Miami claimed the doubles point with victories at flights two and three, which proved to be the deciding factor as the teams split the singles matches. The Hurricane’s 24th-ranked team of Audra Cohen and Caren Seenauth narrowly defeated Federica van Adrichem and Ina Hadziselimovic by an 8-6 margin at flight two, while Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc fell to Laura Vallverdu and Gina Sabatino by the same score at the number three position. Clemson avoided the sweep with a win at flight one as 12th-ranked Carol Salge and Ani Mijacika defeated #22 Romy Farah and Audrey Banada, 8-5.

At the flight one singles position, Tiger Estefania Balda took the nation’s #1-ranked player Audra Cohen to three sets before falling to the Hurricane junior, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. Mijacika, ranked #64, posted an upset over 38th-ranked Audrey Banada at flight two, 6-3, 7-5, for her eighth straight victory. She now boasts an 18-5 overall record and remained undefeated in conference matches at 5-0.

Brito then posted a 7-5, 7-5 victory against Sabatino at the number five match-up and Ina Hadziselmovic dropped the first set to Claudia Wasilewski before rebounding to claim the second and third sets and the win (4-6, 6-0, 7-5).

Miami’s Romy Farah defeated Salge at flight three, 6-4, 7-5, while the Tigers’ van Adrichem fell to Caren Seenauth in a three-set battle at number four (6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3).

Clemson will play host to Duke and North Carolina next weekend in its final home series of the season. The Tigers will face the Blue Devils on Saturday, Mar. 31 at 11:00 am and they play the Tar Heels at 12:00 pm on Sunday.
