RALEIGH, NC – Tiger freshman Ani Mijacika posted her 11th straight singles win as the eighth-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team defeated #45 NC State, 5-2, on Saturday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Complex in Raleigh, NC. The Tigers improved to 16-3 on the year and 7-1 in ACC action, while the Wolfpack dropped to 12-7 overall and 3-5 against conference foes.
Clemson claimed the doubles point for the 15th time this season, as Tiger duos recorded victories at flights two and three. Estefania Balda and Ina Hadziselimovic teamed to defeat Kate Green and Julia Roach at the number two slot, 8-4, while Carol Salge and Maria Brito posted an 8-4 win over Berkeley Brock and Kristen Bleakley at number three. NC State avoided the sweep, as Mijacika and van Adrichem suffered a tough loss to Alejanda Guerra and Daria Petrovic at flight one, 8-7(5).
In singles competition, van Adrichem put the Tigers ahead, 2-0, with a straight-set victory over Raoch at flight four, 7-5, 6-0. The Wolfpack then recorded its first point as Brock defeated Balda at flight two, 7-6(1), 6-3. Mijacika, ranked #24 in the latest Fila/ITA Tennis singles poll, won over Petrovic at the top position (7-5, 7-5) to give Clemson a 3-1 advantage, and Salge clinched the Tigers’ 16th win of the season with a come-from-behind victory at the number three position. She fell, 6-3, in the first set to Guerra before rebounding to claim the second and third sets by the same scores.
Brito and Hadziselimovic fell to NC State players at flights five and six, respectively. Green won by a 6-3, 7-5 margin over Brito, while Neils Barringer defeated Hadziselimovic, 6-0, 6-0.
The Tigers will be back in action on Easter Sunday as they will take on the 15th-ranked Demon Deacons of Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, NC. Match time is slated for 12:00 pm at the Leighton Tennis Center.
