Clemson, S.C. — Jenna Thompson secured her first career victory over a ranked opponent as Clemson (2-1, 0-0 ACC) suffered its first loss of the year to South Carolina (3-2, 0-0 SEC). The loss increased South Carolina’s series lead to 30-27 all-time.
Despite falling behind 4-1 early in her singles match, Thompson persevered to defeat No. 93 Emma Shelton, 6-4, 6-3. However, the Gamecocks secured the doubles point as well as wins on Court 2, 4 and 6 to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.
“I thought I played really well,” said Thompson. “I never gave up. When I was down 4-1 in the first, I just kept believing and I knew I could pull it out. I just kept fighting and I’m really, really happy that I won.”
