BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Clemson swimming and diving teams defeated Virginia Tech Friday afternoon at War Memorial Pool. The Tiger women won 147-96 while the men won 161-80.
Catherine Blaney, Nina Dougles, Patty Hider and Caroline Peterson set a new pool record in the 400 freestyle relay as they won the event with a time of 3:30.40 to lead the Clemson women’s team. The relay team of Kate Walker, Mandy Commons, Elise Thieler and Jenna Burtch won the 400 medley relay while Burtch also won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.46. All-American junior Ginny Kirouac won the 200 IM (2:07.14) while Meaghan Murphy won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.94. Sophomore Courtney Ellis won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:32.21. Senior Betsy Potter won both the one and three meter diving events.
Clemson’s 400 medley relay team of Mark Henly, Matt Norman, Rob Kummer and Will Rogers set a pool record of 3:27.31 and Norman also set a pool record of 2:06.22 in the 200 breaststroke. Senior All-ACC honoree Will Rogers won the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.64 and Brent Hitchcock won the 200 freestyle in 1:43.66. Freshman Travis Taylor was a two-event winner as he claimed the 1000 freestyle event (9:40.27) and the 500 freestyle (4:37.37). Mark Henly won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.68 and Matt Wilson won the 200 IM in 1:55.22. Hitchcock, Kenny Roberts, Drew Scheerhorn and Josh Williams combined to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:11.09. Sophomore Craig Thomas won the one and three meter diving events.
