GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today that Roje Stona (Men’s Field) and Laurie Barton (Women’s Track) have earned ACC Performer of the Week honors after their respective performances this past weekend. Today’s announcement marks the first weekly conference honor for Stona, while Barton receives her second weekly honor during the 2021 season.
Stona collects the ACC’s weekly honor after winning his third discus competition in as many meets this season while contesting the event at ACU’s Oliver Jackson Twilight Invitational on April 21. Down in Abilene, Stona threw 58.47 meters (191 feet, 10 inches) on his sixth and final attempt to win the competition by 1.87m. A native of Montego Bay, Jamaica, Stona has a season’s best of 60.87m (199-8) and currently occupies the second position on Clemson’s all-time list for the event after throwing 61.37m (201-4) during his 2019 campaign.
Barton receives the conference’s recognition after running 2:01.57 for 800m during UCF’s Knights Invite, a time which has now made her the second-fastest performer in school history. Entering the meet, Barton sat at No. 6 all-time in the event after running 2:04.21 at the Miramar Invitational on April 10 in what was her first outdoor 800m race as a Tiger. The Clemson, S.C., native holds the indoor school record for the women’s 800m after crossing the line in 2:01.21 to finish as the national runner-up during the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships on March 13.
Stona and Barton are joined by Louisville’s Gabriela Leon (Women’s Field) and Albert Kosgei (Men’s Track) to round out this week’s conference honors.
