Stanley Reaches US Amateur Match Play

Clemson, SC-Clemson sophomore Kyle Stanley fired a 36-hole score of 140 over Monday and Tuesday to advance to the match play portion of the United States Amateur at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. Stanley had to complete his first round Tuesday morning after their was a four hour delay due to weather.

The native of Gig Harbor, WA had rounds of 69 at the Ocean Course and 71 at the Lakeside Course at the Olympic Club facility over the two days. Sixty-four players will advance to match play. The first round of match play and all subsequent rounds will be played on Wednesday at the 6,948-yard par 70 Lakeside Course.

The Olympic Club has great history. It has been the site of four United States Open Tournaments, including most recently in 1998 when Lee Jansen was victorious. It is also the site of the 2012 United States Open.

Stanley had an opening round 69 on the Ocean Course that featured an eagle three on the par five, 546-yard 11th hole. He also birdied two of his last three holes in that round to finish with a one-under-par 69. At the Lakeside Course, Stanley had a wild ride, making six birdies, but he also had a pair of double bogeys.

Stanley, a first-team All-American and ACC Player of the Year as a freshman, stood in 14th place at even par as of 7:00 PM. The cut for the top 64 is projected to be at four-over par, so he is a lock to advance to match play. His first round opponent will not be known until late tonight or tomorrow. Stanley is trying to become the second golfer in history to win the United States Amateur. Chris Patton won the event at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA in 1989.

Clemson had three other current players competing in the stroke play portion of the event, but they failed to advance to stroke play. Sophomore Sam Saunders had rounds of 74 and 77 for a 151 total, 11 over par, senior Tanner Ervin had rounds of 78-76 for a 154 total, 14-over par, and junior Phillip Mollica had rounds of 84-81 for a 165 total, 25 over par.
