ATHENS, Ga. – The Clemson Tigers completed the second day of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships as six athletes earned singles wins as the Tigers recorded 10 total victories in Athens.
“Great responses from several of our guys today after yesterday. A great day for Max Smith giving himself the opportunity to play in the finals tomorrow in his draw. Lastly, a few of our guys are looking to reset after today and end the weekend on a good note tomorrow. All in all a good day for the Tigers,” Head Coach Brandon Wagner said.
Spencer Whitaker, Maxwell Smith, Trey Stinchcomb and Stewart Aronson all recorded two singles wins on the day as the Tigers dominated on the courts. Whitaker took down UNCW’s Gabe Hurtado (6-3, 6-1) and Charlotte’s Spencer Gray (6-4, 6-3). Aronson defeated Mercer’s Marceau Fouilhoux (6-1, 6-4) and Samuel MacLeod (6-4, 5-7, 6-3). Stinchcomb earned wins against UNCW’s Drew Broadstreet (6-4, 6-3) and Vanderbilt’s Paul Wang (6-2, 6-2). Smith defeated Georgia Tech’s Robert Bauer (6-1, 6-2) which advanced him to the semifinals, where he took down Georgia’s Cyrus Mahjoo (6-3, 6-4).
Marko Mesarovic earned another singles victory as he defeated Mercer’s Nemanja Stefanovic in two sets (6-4, 7-5) as he recorded another win for the fall season. Junior Matt Pitts also earned a singles win as he took down UNCW’s Reece Falck in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-3).
The Tigers will return to the courts tomorrow, October 1st as they prepare to compete in the final day of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
