Scott Clackum and Matt Padgett Earn Regional Baseball Honors

May 29, 1998

CLEMSON, SC–Clemson’s Scott Clackum (North Augusta, SC) and Matt Padgett (Lexington, SC) were among nine ACC players named to the 1998 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Atlantic Region first-team, released by Georgia Southern coach Jack Stallings.

It was the first such regional honor for both players. Earlier this season, Clackum and Padgett were tabbed All-ACC first team. With their selection to the all-region first-team, both players are eligible for All-America honors as voted by the ABCA. The national squad will be released from Omaha, NE early next week.

Clackum, a senior relief pitcher, posted outstanding numbers in 1998 including a 7-1 record and 1.11 ERA. He finished the season with nine saves and gave up just five earned runs in 40.2 innings pitched. He recorded 42 strikeouts to just 11 walks.

Padgett, started in 58 games for the Tigers in 1998 and ended the season as the team’s leading hitter. The junior right fielder finished the year with a .376 average, 14 home runs, and 58 RBI.
