Saturday’s Clemson Football Practice Brief

Aug. 12, 2000

Clemson, SC–Clemson held its second consecutive day of two-a-day practices on Saturday on the fields behind the Jervey Athletic Center. Clemson will break for Fan Appreciation Day on Sunday. The entire team and coaches will be available between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM at Littlejohn Coliseum. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Three Tigers missed the afternoon practice due to injury. Bernard Rambert missed the afternoon practice due to a hip flexor, while Kyle Young was out of both practices due to a foot injury. Theo Mougros had an ankle and knee injury and missed the afternoon practice. None of the injuries are serious.

Clemson running back Terry Witherspoon missed the morning practice, but for a good reason. Witherspoon received his undergraduate degree from Clemson and will play his final year as a graduate student. He was back at practice in the afternoon.

Bowden singled out two players for their performance on Saturday. “Darrel Crutchfield had two interceptions during practice and J.J. Howard made some fine receptions,” said Bowden. “Both of those players stood out to me.

“Crutchfield is coming back from an ACL injury and is making good progress. Alex Ardley is the starter one corner, but Kevin Johnson will be in battle for playing time at the other corner. Howard has been at tight end just a couple of days, but is looking good.”

Overall, Bowden is pleased with his team’s performance the first two days. “The work ethic and enthusiasm have been good so far. I hope it continues next week. We really won’t be able to evaluate the team until we start putting the pads on.”

Bowden said linebacker Travis Roberts missed both practices for personal reasons, absenses Roberts had with permission. His status with the team should be known early next week.

Clemson will be back on the practice fields for two practices on Monday. The team will wear full pads for the first time on Tuesday.
