Russ Named Academic All-American

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson softball graduate transfer Sam Russ have been selected to the Third Team Academic All-America softball team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday.

Russ, an MBA student from Charlotte, N.C., becomes the first player in Clemson softball history to earn the Academic All-America honor.

Russ earned the third-team spot as an outfielder after spending 2022 in left field. She is one-of-three players from the ACC to be on any of the three Academic All-America teams – 37 student-athletes in total.

Russ played started all 59 games for the Tigers in 2022, collecting 46 hits with seven doubles, five triples and three home runs. She set the single season record for stolen bases at Clemson with 29 and finished the season with 30 runs scored and 14 RBIs.

To be eligible for the honor, players must sport at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average – Russ’ is at 3.88 – and be a starter or significant reserve for their respective teams.
