Rowing Hosts Carolina Cup to Open Spring

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson rowing team opened their 2018 spring campaign on Lake Hartwell on Saturday morning, hosting Duke and North Carolina for the Carolina Cup. Duke won all five races of the morning, totaling 99 points and earning the Daughtry Cup. North Carolina and Clemson alternated on second and third place finishes, with the Tar Heels just edging the Tigers for a second-place 81 points to the Tigers’ 77.

“We definitely have some work to do,” head coach Stephen Frazier Wong said. “As coaches, we have to make sure that we’re getting our young rowers really prepared for race day. Today showed some inexperience. We have a good, solid foundation to build off of, but we, as coaches, have to work on preparing our rowers for more of that race day atmosphere and difference. Practices have been going really well, and they might be a little too comfortable. We need to make sure that we are more uncomfortable in practice. We faced some strong competition in Duke and North Carolina, and we’ve gotten the first one down. We had some really solid racing today, and we’ll improve for next week.”

Clemson’s best performances of the day came in the final two races, and the Tigers placed second in both of those events. In the 2V8, the boat coxswained by Erin Murphy finished just ahead of the North Carolina boat with a time of 6:53.2 to the Tar Heels’ 6:53.7. Megan Kauffeld’s boat in the 1V8 pulled ahead of the North Carolina boat late in the race to solidify their second place finish time of 6:46.8.

The Tigers did not compete in the 3V8, instead sending two boats to race the 2V4. The two Clemson boats came in third and fourth, with the one coxswained by Katie Holmes finishing with a time of 8:03.3 and Sarah Adams’ boat ending with a time of 8:31.6. Clemson also placed third in the 1V4, as Katie Herbolsheimer led her boat to a time of 7:52.1.

The rowing team will return to the water next weekend when it travels to the Cardinal Invite, an event that runs from Mar. 17-18 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
