Ohio State Downs Clemson in Close Match

Clemson, SC—Home standing Ohio State downed Clemson 3.5-2.5 in the final round of the Barbara Nicklaus Cup at Dublin, Ohio on Tuesday morning. The two-day match play tournament was held at Muirfield Village, the home of the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament.

Clemson finished the event with a 1-2 record, after beating Florida and losing to Charlotte on Monday.

Tuesday’s match with the Buckeyes was very close, as three of the six matches were tied. Ohio State won a match 1-up and another 2-up. Clemson’s Andrew Swanson was the only golfer to in dominating fashion, a 5&3 victory over Ohio State’s Timotej Formank at the number-four singles match.

The overall team match came down to the final hole in the final match on the course, the number-six singles between Clemson’s Kian Rose and Ohio State’s Tyler Sabo. Rose had a 1-up lead with two holes to play, but Sabo won the 17th hole, then made a 15-foot par putt on the 18th hole to force the tie in his match, and give Ohio State the overall team victory.

Rich Wills tied Ohio State’s Jack Vojtko in the number-three singles match. It gave the Clemson freshman a 2-0-1 record for the tournament, the best record among Clemson golfers. Swanson finished with a 1-1-1 record, as did Clemson’s Sean Curran, who tied Jacob Tarkany in the first match on Tuesday.

Clemson will continue its fall schedule October 18-20 when it competes in the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate in Alpharetta, Ga.
