NOTRE DAME, IND. – Notre Dame (6-3) took advantage of a pair of non-offensive touchdowns and an interception deep in Tiger territory that led to another score to defeat No. 5/5 Clemson, 35-14, on Saturday night at Notre Dame Stadium. The loss dropped the Tigers to 8-1 on the season and snapped Clemson’s nation-leading 14-game winning streak.
Earlier in the evening, by virtue of Pitt’s win over Syracuse, Clemson clinched a place in the ACC Championship Game, which takes place in Charlotte on Dec. 3.
Defensively, Clemson held the Irish to 348 yards and just 85 through the air, but the Irish accumulated 263 rushing yards. Running back Will Shipley led Clemson with 101 all-purpose yards, 63 of which came on the ground, and added a rushing touchdown. In the air, tight end Davis Allen led the team in receptions with seven for 60 yards.
The Fighting Irish got on the board first. With 9:08 left in the first quarter, Prince Kollie returned a blocked punt 17 yards for a Notre Dame touchdown. The Irish would score another touchdown with 38 seconds left in the first half, making the score 14-0 at the half.
Cade Klubnik entered the game with 1:30 left in the third quarter. An interception on his first pass attempt gave Notre Dame the ball on the Clemson 14-yard line. The Irish scored three plays later to take a 21-0 lead.
Uiagalelei returned at quarterback on their following possession and led the Tigers 56 yards before Benjamin Morrison intercepted his pass and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown, increasing Notre Dame’s lead to 28-0 with 12:58 left to play.
Shipley got the Tigers on the scoreboard with 10:14 left in the fourth quarter, punching the ball into the end zone with a one-yard rushing touchdown. Notre Dame added one more touchdown with 4:16 left in the fourth quarter.
Clemson scored the game’s final points, as Uiagalelei threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Ngata.
With its 2022 road slate now complete, Clemson will conclude the regular season with a three-game homestand against Louisville, Miami (Fla.) and South Carolina.
