No. 8 Clemson Tops Virginia Tech in Blacksburg

April 17, 2010

BLACKSBURG, VA – Senior Ina Hadziselimovic tied the school record with her 100th career doubles win, in helping No. 8 Clemson (20-4, 8-2 ACC) to a 6-1 win over Virginia Tech (9-11, 2-8 ACC) on Saturday. For Clemson, it was the 20th win in 2010, surpassing last season’s total, and guarantees the Tigers a first-round bye in next week’s ACC Tournament.

For Clemson, it was the ninth win in the last ten matches, and leaves the Tigers one-win shy of a 9-2 mark in the ACC for the second consecutive year.

Hadziselimovic, teamed with Josipa Bek to form the nation’s ninth-ranked doubles team, defeated the 63rd-ranked duo of Yasmin Hamsa and Holly Johnson, 8-0. For Hadziselimovic, it was her 30th doubles win of the year and 100th in her career.

Estefania Balda and Keri Wong clinched the doubles point at flight three with an 8-4 win over Courtney Rauscher and Katie Blow.

The Tigers clinched the match quickly in singles, as Hadziselimovic, the nation’s #102 singles player, defeated Shannon Betts, 6-2, 6-1 at flight three. Then, #19 Josipa Bek defeated Yasmin Hamza 6-4, 6-2 at flight one to win her eighth straight match.

#71 Keri Wong clinched her second straight match for Clemson with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Martha Blakely at flight two. She had won in three sets last Sunday to help Clemson beat #7 Duke.

With the match already clinched, Balda fell in a super tiebreaker third set, 10-6, to Rauscher, who put Tech on the board. #89 Nelly Ciolkowski won in a third set super tiebreak, 10-5 over Emily Lauten at flight four. Ciolkowski is now 27-5 on the year.

Caroline Magnusson was the last to finish with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win at flight six over Holly Johnson.

Clemson returns to action tomorrow with a noon match at #31 Virginia. The Tigers can wrap up the three seed in the ACC Tournament with a win.
