No. 7 Clemson Readies for Road Test at Furman

Clemson, S.C. – The seventh-ranked Clemson men’s soccer team is set to travel to Greenville for a match under the lights of Stone Stadium at Furman University on Tuesday night. The match will provide an opportunity for Head Coach Mike Noonan to capture his 100th win while at the helm of Clemson’s program. The contest will be Clemson’s second road test of the season, winning their first away game at Notre Dame in convincing fashion.

Series Notes

  • Tuesday night’s match will be the 57th meeting between the two programs, with Clemson holding a commanding series lead of 41-12-3.
  • The Tigers and Paladins first met on Feb. 14, 1934, with Furman winning the match by a 0-1 score line.
  • Between 1967 and 1985, Clemson won 20 consecutive meetings in the series. During that streak, in a match against the Paladins on Oct. 3, 1973, Clemson scored 16 goals. The mark stands as the second most goals scored in a game in program history.
  • Last time the two sides met was in 2018, when Clemson beat Furman 5-2 at Historic Riggs Field.

Clemson Notes

  • No. 7 Clemson starts the season with a 7-0 record for only the 7th time in program history. The last time Clemson started 7-0 was in 2006, with that year’s team starting 8-0 start to open the season.
  • Clemson is led in scoring by Kimarni Smith, who has netted eight goals this year. Teammate Robbie Robinson follows closely behind Smith with seven of his own.
  • Phillip Mayaka has tallied six assists through the first seven games and is among the nation’s leaders in the category.
  • As a defensive unit, Clemson has allowed opponents to only score seven goals, tally six assists and take 43 shots.
  • Malick Mbaye continues to lead the team in minutes played, with 615 minutes tallied thus far.

Furman Notes

  • The Paladins enter the Tuesday night contest with a 5-2-1 record, holding a 3-0-0 record at home.
  • Furman shares two opponents with the Tigers, having already played South Carolina and USC Upstate. The Paladins lost to the Gamecocks by a 0-3 margin, and later beat USC Upstate 4-1.
  • Furman is led by Head Coach Doug Allison, who is in his 24th season with the program. Allison just passed 300 wins earlier this season with a 3-0 victory over Winthrop, and enters Tuesday’s match with 303 total wins.
