No. 6 Georgia Downs No. 17 Clemson on Sunday Afternoon

ATHENS, GA – The sixth-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team (10-1) defeated No. 17 Clemson (7-4) by a 7-0 count on Sunday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, GA. The Bulldogs won the doubles point and dropped just one set in singles play, as Clemson freshman Romy Koelzer forced a third set at flight five singles.  The match featured eight players ranked nationally in singles, with three wearing orange. The win was Georgia’s second in a row in the series, which is now tied, 22-22, and has seen both teams ranked among the nation’s top-25 teams in each of the past seven matchups. The Tigers have dropped four the their past five matches overall after starting 6-1 this season, with each of the five match coming against team ranked 26th or better. Georgia took the doubles point in a sweep, dropping just eight total games to the Tigers to move ahead 1-0 in the match. They took the momentum into singles, where No. 9 Chelsey Gullickson defeated Josipa Bek, 6-3, 6-0 at one singles. Nadja Gilchrist the took down freshman Beatrice Gumulya, 6-3, 6-4 at flight three. No. 80 clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Monika Kochanova at flight six. The Bulldogs then took matches among ranked players at flights five and two in straight sets to take a 6-0 lead. Keri Wong fought off a 5-1 deficit in the first set against No. 60 Lauren Herring before Herring rattled off two straight games to take the set, and eventually win the second set, 7-5 as well. Koelzer droped the first set to Lilly Kimbell, 6-3, before bouncing back for a 7-5 win in the second set to force a super tiebreaker, which she won, 10-7.  Clemson opens conference play next Sunday as they play No. 14 Miami in Coral Gables, FL.
