RALEIGH, N.C. – Clemson (10-12, 1-9 ACC) started the match off incredibly well, picking up the doubles point but ultimately fell to No. 21 NC State (16-7, 5-5 ACC) 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Wolfpack got off to a quick start in doubles play as No. 39 pair Catry/Staeheli won on Court 2, 6-3. The Tigers came back firing shortly after as Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Daniel Labrador earned the victory on Court 3 by a score of 6-4 to tie things up at one apiece. It all came down to Court 1 where Spencer Whitaker and Ryuhei Azuma played incredible tennis to take the match, 7-6 over No. 41 pair Van Sambeek/Rocens to secure the doubles point.
The Wolfpack picked up the first singles point of the afternoon on Court 6 and continued to excel, winning on Courts 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 to take the match, 5-2. The day was highlighted by sophomore Whitaker’s performance where he went two for two, defeating No. 67 Robin Catry on Court 4 along with defeating No. 41 pair Van Sambeek/Rocens with partner Azuma.
Up next, the Tigers will host Florida State on Thursday, April 14 and Miami on Saturday, April 16 for the final two regular-season matches. First serve against the Seminoles is at 5 p.m. while the Tigers will take on the Hurricanes at noon.
