No. 15 Clemson Pushes Win Streak to Five with Win at N.C. State

March 27, 2011

RALEIGH, NC – The No. 15 women’s tennis team dropped the doubles point but took decisions at each of the first four singles spots en route to a 5-2 win at No. 32 NC State (10-5, 1-4 ACC) on Sunday. The Tigers (15-5, 3-2 ACC) closed out the week 2-0 in road ACC matches and ran their win streak to five straight overall, with all of those coming on the road. The match was held indoors as weather in Raleigh was in the low 40s.

Ani Mijacika, who was 26-12 in her three seasons in three-set matches, and former teammate and doubles partner Ina Hadizselimovic for tenth all-time in wins. Bek’s ten three-set wins this season already rank third in school history for a single season.

NC State took the first decision in doubles, with Lenka Hojckova and Tatiana Illova defeating Masha Belaya and Caroline Magnusson, 8-3.

Despite that, Clemson looked to have the doubles point in hand, as the nation’s top-ranked duo of Bek and Keri Wong defeated No. 19 Sanaa Bhambri and Sandyha Nagaraj at flight one.

Over on court three, Laurianne Henry and Klara Vyskocilova held a 7-4 advantage over Joelle Kissell and Ashley Miller. But the Pack would not go quietly, as the duo made a furious comeback, downing the Tiger group for the doubles point, 9-8.

The Tigers wasted little time in getting on the board in singles play, as No. 62 Wong easily upset 24th-ranked Bhambri at flight two, 6-2, 6-1. No. 113 Ciolkowski wasn’t far behind, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Hojckova at flight four.

12th-ranked Josipa Bek put the first set loss behind her, as she won 12 of the last 13 games overall in her 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win to improve to 27-7 overall on the season, and move up the all-time wins list.

Freshman Klara Vyskocilova defeated Illova at flight four to clinch the match with her 7-6(7), 6-2 victory.

Belaya won, 6-3, 6-1 at flight six, and Magnusson dropped Clemson’s only singles match on the day, a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Joelle Kissell at flight six.

Clemson returns home for the first time since March 6 as they take on Boston College and Maryland on April 2 and 3, respectively.
