No. 14 Clemson Takes Down Winthrop, 6-1

CLEMSON, SC – The 14th-ranked women’s tennis team defeated the Winthrop Eagles (3-2) by an 6-1 count on Wednesday afternoon. Clemson improved to 3-0 on the season by winning doubles and getting strong singles performances from the middle of the lineup. The Tigers will now ready themselves for the ITA Kickoff Weekend, in which they’ll host the first two rounds of the national tournament. Clemson will take on Purdue in the first round at 2:00 pm Saturday, and the winner will play the winner of the 10:00 am Kansas State and Wake Forest match. Romy Kölzer played doubles together for the second straight match, a winning combination as they won 8-1 at flight two. Monika Kochanova and Klara Vyskocilova then won, 8-3 at flight three to clinch the doubles point for the second straight match. Nelly Ciolkowski and Keri Wong fell at flight one in a tiebreaker after the Tigers has clinched the point. Clemson went up 2-0 when Ciolkowski, ranked 67th in the country, took down Ekin Gunaysu, 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 3-0 in the dual match season. 58th-ranked Klara Vyskocilova finished not long after, defeating Sandra Herrera, 6-1, 6-2 at flight four to improve to 2-1 this season. Wong clinched the match at flight two with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win against Andressa Garcia, as she moved to 3-0 on the young season. Winthrop earned a point back at number-one singles when Yasmine Alkema handed Bek her first loss of the 2012 season, 6-3, 6-2.  Kochanova and Kölzer finished strong, each winning in straight sets, dropping just five games among the two of them.
