No. 14 Clemson Advances in ITA Kickoff Weekend

CLEMSON, SC – The 14th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday with a 4-0 win over UNC-Wilmington (2-2). Clemson (4-0) will take on No. 59 Purdue (1-0) Sunday at 1:00 pm for a berth in the ITA Team National Indoor Championships, which are held in Charlottesville, VA from Feb. 10-13. Clemson took the doubles point and won singles matches at two, three, and four to clinch the win. Kansas State and UNC-Wilmington will play at 9:00 am at the Indoor courts as well. The Tigers earned the doubles point for the third consecutive match, this time winning at flights two and three to down the Seahawks. Romy Kölzer were the first to finish, winning 8-4 at two in their second match together. Monika Kochanova and Klara Vyskocilova won, 8-3 at three doubles to clinch the point, while Keri Wong and Josipa Bek did not finish, but had set up match point before play was halted with the clinch. Vyskocilova improved to 7-3 on the year, winning 6-1, 6-1 at flight four over Christina Riley. Ciolkowski, ranked 65th in the nation, fought off a 4-2 second-set deficit, rattling off four straight games to win, 6-4, 6-4 at flight three and improve to 9-2 on the year. Keri Wong improved to 4-0 this season after winning the first set in a tiebreaker, and outlasting Angela Sekely at flight two, 7-6(2), 7-5. Wong is now 8-4 overall, with four straight wins in dual match play. The middle of the lineup has been strong for the Tigers this season, with a combined mark of 11-1 at the 2-3-4 slots, held down by Wong, Ciolkowski, and Vyskocilova. Josipa Bek led in the third set of her match, 4-3, when play was called at flight one. Kochanova and Kölzer were in the first set of their respective matches when the Tigers clinched. Clemson advances to take on No. 59 Purdue, who upset No. 46 Kansas State on Saturday by a 4-1 count earlier in the day. No. 14 Clemson (4-0) def.
