No. 13 Tigers Upset Bid Comes Up Short Over No. 9 Georgia

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 13th ranked Clemson women’s tennis team fell to 9th ranked Georgia 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The match was tightly contested, and momentum switched multiple times as four singles matched went to three sets. With the loss, the Tigers move to 2-1 on the season and the Bulldogs improve to 3-1.

In doubles action, the Bulldogs took the point, winning on courts two and three. On court three, Georgia’s duo of Brinson and King defeated Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz 6-1 and seconds later their teammates Garcia and Shaffer defeated Tristen Dewar and Romy Koelzer 6-1 on court two to clinch the doubles point. The second-ranked pair of Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies was down 5-3 but did not finish the match after Georgia clinched the doubles victory.

In singles, Beatrice Gumulya evened the score with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win on court two. Then on court one, No. 85 Romy Koelzer’s upset bid came up just short as she fell to 19th ranked Lauren Herring in three sets. Tristen Dewar and No. 27 Joana Eidukonyte got the momentum back on Clemson’s side with three-set wins on courts four and three, respectively, to put the Tigers up 3-2. Dewar’s win was over No. 91 Hannah King. At number five singles, the Bulldogs evened the score as Caroline Brinson defeated Jessy Rompies 6-4, 6-3. It came down to number six singles where freshman Daniela Ruiz fought but ultimately fell to Mariana Gould, 7-6(3), 6-4.

The Tigers take the courts again Sunday, Feb. 1 when they host the 21st ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. The Gamecocks are 4-1, coming off of a 5-2 loss at No. 10 Virginia on Jan. 30. The Tigers are 26-23 all-time against the Gamecocks and have won 11 of the last 13 meetings. In 2014, No. 12 Clemson downed No. 32 South Carolina 5-2 in Columbia.
