No. 11 Women’s Tennis Opens 2011 with Win Over Troy

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team, ranked 11th nationally, opened the 2011 season with a 7-0 victory over Troy University on Friday afternoon in the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The Tigers (1-0) improve to 30-4 all-time in season-opening matches.

The Tigers hav e little time to rest, as they will take on Memphis at 8:00 am on Saturday morning, and will play USC Upstate at 5:00 pm, both at the Indoor Tennis Center. The matches are free of charge.

The nation’s second-ranked duo of Josipa Bek and Keri Wong got things started with an 8-2 win at flight one doubles. They took the first three sets, dropped the next two, but then won the next five to close out Grymel and Guijt.

Laurianne Henry and Maria Belaya closed doubles with an 8-6 win in their first match together.

Clemson swept singles, as #48 Keri Wong won her match 6-0, 4-0, and was up 40-love when her opponent suffered an ankle injury and had to retire. Josipa Bek, ranked #12 nationally, followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Karoline Grymel to put Clemson ahead, 3-0.

Vyskocilova, in her first collegiate match, defeated Leonie Guijt at flight three, 6-2, 6-3. Ciolkowski got her season started by following up with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lyuboy Dorofeeva.

Laurianne Henry won 8-2 in a pro set against Gabriella Viega and Maria Belaya ended the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Rosaura Ramirez-Vega.
