CLEMSON, S.C. — Hampton Roberts fired a season best six under-par 66, tied for the best round by any golfer on Sunday, to lead Clemson to a 284 team score and a fifth place finish on Sunday at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate. The 14-team tournament was played at the par 72 Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga.
The fifth-place finish was the best for the Clemson program at that event since a third place finish in 2015, and it was just the second top 5 at the annual fall tournament that features a national field since 2009 when Clemson won the tournament.
Host school Georgia Tech finished first at 16-under-par score of 856, while Georgia Southern finished second at 857. Southern California was third at 14-under par and Pepperdine was fourth at -11. The Tigers were eight under par for the 54 hole event to finish fifth, while Stanford was sixth at six-under and Duke was seventh at five-under.
Oscar Valdemar Holm Bredkjær was Clemson’s top golfer for the weekend with a score of eight-under-par 208 to finish in a tie for fourth place, just two shots off the individual medalist, Carson Looney of Duke. Bredkjaer finished with 13 birdies to tie for the fourth highest total in the field and played the par five holes in a team best 4.33 stroke average.
The native of Denmark had rounds of 67-70-71 to record his second top five finish of the year. He has now shot par or better in six of his nine rounds so far this year. He was ranked as the 25th best player in the nation according to Spikemark entering the tournament, so his ranking should improve next week.
Roberts finished 10th overall with a 211 score for the 54 holes, five-under-par. He posted rounds of 70-75-66 and had a 3.87 average on par four holes for the weekend, best on the Clemson team. His round on Sunday was his best as a Tiger. Roberts, who was bogey free for his first 16 holes, had seven birdies and one bogey on Sunday and finished with 13 birdies for the tournament, tied for fourth in the field with Bredkjaer.
Junior Rich Wills had the third best score for the Tigers on Sunday with a 73. He had six birdies for the tournament and had a solid 4.07 stroke average on par four holes. Wills finished in 58th place with a score of seven-over-par 223 after rounds of 72-78-73.
Daniel McBrien and Gabriel Holtz both had rounds of 74 on Sunday. Holtz, who had a 67 in the first round, finished 46th at four-over-par 220. He had 10 birdies and a 3.93 stroke average on par four holes. McBrien finished at 221 for the 54 holes, good enough for 53rd place. He had nine birdies and a 4.83 stroke average on par five holes.
Biagia Gagliardi played the tournament as an individual and shot a 77 on Sunday to finish at nine over par 225 for the tournament, good enough for 66th place. He had nine birdies and the only eagle of the tournament by a Clemson golfer.
Clemson concludes its fall schedule October 26-28 at the Ka’anapali Classic in Hawaii.
