CLEMSON, S.C. — Both Clemson golf programs will join the men and women from Ohio State, Michigan and Charlotte to compete in the Barbara Nicklaus Cup on Monday and Tuesday at the famed Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. The four programs will compete in a match play format tournament October 5-6.  Each team will play 36 holes of match play on Monday and 18 holes of match play on Tuesday.

Clemson will face Michigan in the first round Monday morning and face the teams from Charlotte and Ohio State in the remaining rounds. A tournament winner will be based off a scoring system combining the results of the men’s and women’s matches.   

This will be the second appearance for the Clemson golf program at the Barbara Nicklaus Cup. Two years ago Clemson’s women had a 3-0 team record with wins over Charlotte, Florida and Ohio State. The Clemson men were 1-2, and the overall program finished second based on total number of match victories between the two programs.

This year the Clemson men have played in two tournaments, including a fourth-place finish at the Bryan Brothers Collegiate in West Columbia, S.C. Oscar Bredkjaer leads the team in stroke average at 70.67. He finished second in a national field at the Inverness Intercollegiate to open the season. Hampton Roberts had a ninth-place finish to lead the Tigers at the Bryan Brothers.

Rich Wills is the only Clemson player in the lineup this week who also played in the 2024 Nicklaus Cup. He posted a 2-0-1 record at the event on the course that plays host to the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament. Wills had a season best 67 in the first round of the Bryan Brothers Collegiate.   

The Clemson women have played in three tournaments so far this year. Kelley Hester’s team won the season opening Tiger Classic, finished ninth at the Cougar Classic and 10th at the Mason Rudolph. Keya Naik has the top stroke average among Clemson golfers competing this week wit ha 72.63 stroke average.

The Michigan men have already won two tournaments this year, the Virtues Intercollegiate and the Island Resort Collegiate. Clemson has had the upper hand in head to head competition however, finishing higher in the standings than the Wolverines at Inverness and the Bryan Brothers, by a combined 34 strokes.

The Michigan Women have played in a pair of tournaments, finishing sixth at the Badger Collegiate and eighth at the Canadien Collegiate.

Each team match will be composed of 12 matches, six men and six women.
