CLEMSON, S.C. – Anika Groom led the Tigers with 17 kills in the Bobcats five-set win against App State on Sunday evening. Alongside her, setter Katherine Sandt took her place in the top-10 in Clemson Volleyball history for assists as she reached 2,077 during the match.
How It Happened:
Clemson started the match with an effective attack, swinging .360 in the first set, but the Mountaineers matched that well with a .273. Neither side was able to find much of a lead as the teams were within two points throughout the entire set. Clemson was able to edge out a 26-24 set win to go up 1-0, though.
In the second set, Katherine Sandt recorded the assist that officially put her in the top-10 in program history for career assists with 2,054 being the landmark number. The set was once again close between the two teams, with App State narrowly winning 25-23 this time.
Khaya Gordon started in the third set, making her first appearance as a Tiger this season. She’d go on to record three kills in her debut set to help the Tigers to a 26-24 set win. Alongside her was another four from Anika Groom who led the Tigers in kills.
App State controlled the fourth set, going up early on the Tigers and going on to win the set 25-17.
The Tigers started the 6th set on a 6-1 run to effectively end the match. The Mountaineers battled but Clemson would go on to win the fifth set 15-7. The team’s attack was its best of the night in the 5th set
With the 3-1 win the Tigers are now 4-1 on the season.
