CLEMSON, S.C. — Senior Hampton Roberts fired two under-par rounds, and Daniel McBrien shot a two-under-par 69 and an eve- par 71, to lead Clemson to a third-place standing out of 16 teams on a 36-hole day at the Bryan Brothers Collegiate in West Columbia, S.C. The tournament is being played at the par 71 Solina Golf Club.
Eight of the 16 teams, including Clemson completed all 36 holes on Monday, as darkness halted play. The 16 teams will complete the 54-hole event on Tuesday.
Clemson had a team score of 10-under-par 274 in the first round, good enough for second place, then had a one-over-par team score of 285 in the afternoon. All five Clemson golfers shot under par in the first round.
Liberty, who still has five holes to play Tuesday morning, is tied for the lead with Mississippi at 13-under par. Mississippi completed its second round on Monday afternoon. Arkansas is just one shot behind Clemson at -8 and host school South Carolina is fifth at -7.
Hampton, a transfer from North Carolina, had rounds of 69 and 70 for his three under par score of 139 on Monday. He is in a tie for 10th place thanks to nine birdies and an eagle over his first two rounds.
Daniel McBrien, a freshman from Holly Springs, N.C. shot a 69 in his first career round as a Tiger thanks to six birdies and four bogeys. He is the first Clemson freshman to shoot a round in the 60s in his first career round in the Clemson team lineup since Kyle Stanley opened his Clemson career with a 68 at the Carpet Classic on September 15, 2006. McBrien then shot an even-par 71 in the second round and stands in a tie for 12th place entering Tuesday’s final round.
Another freshman, Gabriel Holtz, also ranks in the top 20 after 36 holes after rounds of 69 and 72. His 141 total is good enough for 19th place. He had an eagle three on the 535-yard par five sixth hole in the first round.
Oscar Bredkjaer, Clemson’s best player at the Inverness Intercollegiate in the first tournament of the year when he finished second against a strong field, had rounds of 70 and 72 on Monday and his even par total stands in 31st place.
Rich Wills was Clemson’s top golfer in the first round with a 67 thanks to a four under par 30 on the front nine. But the junior had a 76 in the second round and was the non-counter. Wills did play the final five holes at two under par. He stands in 37th place at one over par.
Biagio Gagliardi is playing the tournament as an individual and had rounds of 69 and 71 to rank in a tie for 12th place at two-under-par.
