CLEMSON, S.C. — Senior Hampton Roberts recorded his third under-par round of the tournament on Tuesday to lead Clemson to a fourth-place finish out of 16 teams at the Bryan Brothers Collegiate at Solina Golf Club in West Columbia, S.C.
Mississippi won the tournament with a 19-under-par team score of 833 for the 54 holes that were played over Monday and Tuesday. Arkansas was second at 18-under and Liberty was third at 17-under. The Tigers were fourth at nine-under-par, while UAB was fifth at three-under par. Host school South Carolina finished sixth at one-under.
Roberts, a transfer from North Carolina, had rounds of 69-70-70 for a 54-hole score of four-under-par 209 to finish ninth in the individual competition. He was strong in all phases of the game, averaging 3.07 on par three holes, 4.07 on par fours and 4.42 on par fives. He finished with a team best 14 under-par holes, 13 birdies and one eagle. He was bogey free with three birdies over the last 10 holes on Tuesday.
Gabriel Holtz was Clemson’s best golfer on Tuesday with a score of two-under-par 69. The freshman from Boca Raton, Fla. finished very strong, making three birdies over the last four holes. It was his second round of 69 for the tournament. He finished with a 210 score for the 54 holes, good enough for 12th place. He had nine birdies and an eagle over the tournament.
Oscar Valdemar Holm Bredkjær shot an even-par 71 in the final round to finish even par for the tournament with a 213 score, good enough for 20th place. He had rounds of 70-72-71 over the tournament. He finished with eight birdies and his first eagle of the year. He was one of five Tigers to play the par three holes in one-over par, a reason Clemson had the second best par three team scoring average for the tournament.
Daniel McBrien, a freshman from Holly Springs, N.C. finished 26th with a 214 score, one-over-par. He had a two-under-par 69 in the opening round to become the first Clemson true freshman to shoot in the 60s in his first career round as member of the Clemson team lineup since Kyle Stanley in 2006. McBrien had rounds of 71 and 74 to finish the tournament. He was the top Tiger on par four holes with a 4.04 average and he led the team n birdies with 15.
Junior Rich Wills had an opening round 67, the low round of the tournament among Clemson golfers, but finished with rounds of 76 and 74 for a 217 total, good enough for 42nd place.
Biagio Gagliardi, a native of Rome, Italy, played the tournament as an individual and finished 30th with a 215 score after rounds of 69-71-75.
The Tigers will return to action next Monday and Tuesday when they compete in the match play formatted Barbara Nicklaus Cup at famed Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
