CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson battled through multiple deficits and produced a third-set comeback before falling to Wofford in four sets, 17-25, 24-26, 25-23, 21-25.
After dropping the opening set, the Tigers nearly evened the match in a tightly contested second frame. Clemson erased a 15-10 deficit behind Maddie Anspaugh and Talea Mitchell, whose two service aces helped fuel a 5-0 run. Lauren Schneider later helped Clemson take the lead before McKenna Gildon’s ace extended the advantage to 22-19. Wofford answered late, eventually taking the set 26-24.
Clemson responded in the third with its biggest comeback of the match. Trailing 22-18, the Tigers rattled off five consecutive points behind Alyssa Irwin and Anspaugh. Irwin contributed a kill and two service aces during the run, while Anspaugh helped Clemson tie the set at 22-all. Anspaugh later delivered the set-clinching kill off a Katherine Sandt assist to complete the 25-23 comeback.
The Tigers carried that momentum into the fourth, overcoming an early 7-2 deficit to take a 17-16 lead. Kennedy Wagner and Anspaugh helped Clemson remain even with Wofford late, with Anspaugh’s kill tying the set at 21-all. The Terriers scored the final four points, however, to take the set 25-21 and secure the match.
With the 1-3 loss the Tigers are now 5-4 on the season.
