CLEMSON, S.C. – Maddie Anspaugh highlighted the night for the Tigers in the team’s 3-1 win with 20 kills, the most by a freshman in a single match since 2020-21. She helped the Tigers to a 3-1 win on Sunday evening.
How It Happened:
Clemson’s defense was effective throughout the first set, limiting the Buccaneers to a .067 attack percentage in the first set. While going that the visitors had just seven kills, while Clemson tallied 15 in the first set Five of the Tigers’ kills came from Anika Groom who led the team. Clemson won set one 25-20.
The Buccaneers were able to narrowly win the second set though, after improving to a .152 attack percentage while limiting Clemson to .114. The Buccaneers were able to tally three blocks to the Tigers one to find a 25-22 set win. It was a back and forth set throughout with nine tied scores and three lead changes.
The third set was a battle between the two teams that Clemson was able to narrowly edge out with a 26-24 win to put them up 2-1 in the match. A solo block from Alyssa Irwin for set point ultimately won Clemson the set after coming back from a 20-15 deficit.
In the fourth set, Anspaugh became the first freshman since 2020-21 to have a 18+ kill match for the Clemson Tigers as she got herself up to 20 on throughout the match. Clemson won set four 25-20.
With the 3-1 win the Tigers are now 1-1 on the season.

The Tigers will stay home for a second tournament inside Jervey Gym beginning Sept. 4 against UNC Greensboro at 6 pm. The Clemson Invitational will see the Tigers host East Carolina and App State in addition to UNC Greensboro. All three of the Tigers matches will be streamed on ACCNX.
