LEXINGTON, Ky. – The first day of the NCAA East Regional Prelims was highlighted by five Clemson Track & Field athletes advancing to Friday’s quarterfinals that included sophomore Ian Johnson advancing to his first regional quarterfinals in two different events. 

The Tigers started the NCAA East Regional on a strong note with both Sharvis Simmonds and Khailan Vitalis qualifying for the quarterfinals after finishing in the top three in their heat of the 110m hurdles. Simmonds, a senior who is competing at regionals for the second time as a Tigers, finished in 13.64, while Vitalis, a junior, clocked a 13.76 time.

  1. Johnson joined Simmonds and Vitalis in the quarterfinals after running 10.26 in the 100m. This marked the first collegiate quarterfinal qualification for I. Johnson after finishing 41st in the first round of regionals last season.

Clemson rounded out the day with two Tigers advancing to Friday’s men’s quarterfinal competition in the 200m. I. Johnson once again led the Tigers with a time of 20.44 which won his heat and finished 10th overall. Jalen Johnson clinched the 11th overall finish in the first round of the event with a third-place finish in his heat at 20.46.

Men’s 100m First Round

  • 21st Place | I. Johnson – 10.26 seconds (Qualified for quarterfinals)
  • 36th Place | Collins – 10.39 seconds

Men’s 110m Hurdles First Round

  • 14th Place | Simmonds – 13.64 seconds (Qualified for quarterfinals)
  • 19th Place | Vitalis – 13.76 seconds (Qualified for quarterfinals)

Men’s 200m First Round

  • 10th Place | I. Johnson – 20.44 seconds (Qualified for quarterfinals)
  • 11th Place | Jalen Johnson – 20.46 seconds (Qualified for quarterfinals)
  • 28th Place | Kevin Collins – 20.81 seconds

Men’s 400m First Round

Up Next

Clemson will return to action tomorrow, May 28, when the women take the stage, competing in the women’s hammer throw, long jump, 100m hurdles, shot put, 100m, 400m, 800m and 400m hurdles.
