CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 11/11 Clemson Lacrosse (11-4, 5-3 ACC) extended its program record win streak to eight games by defeating California (6-9, 1-7 ACC), 17-8, at California Memorial Stadium on Friday evening.
The Clemson duo of sophomore attack Brooke Goldstein and junior attack Regan Byrne finished the night with four goals apiece. Phenomenon freshman attack Alexa Spallina dished out seven assists on the day. The trio of junior midfielder Natalie Shurtleff, freshman defender Teagan Scott and graduate midfielder Bridget Babcock each scooped up a pair of ground balls. Babcock also led the Tigers with three caused turnovers. Sophomore defender Kira Balis racked up seven draw controls on the day.
FIRST QUARTER | 6-2, Clemson
The Tigers found the back of the net first, just 36 seconds into the contest Emma Penczek scored her 22nd goal of the year. In the following 40 seconds, Clemson Struck yet again, with back-to-back goals by Brooke Goldstein (26th goal of the season) in the 13th minute. At the 9:44 mark, Cal’s Alina Hsu scored the Golden Bears' first goal of the day. Fourty-Four seconds late, Alexa Spalina collected her 31st goal of the season. The following seven minutes of gametime were scoreless until the Tiger broke the drought courtesy of Mikaela Mooney. With 81 seconds left, Hsu scored Cal’s second goal of the day before Clemson’s Natalie Shurtleff (31st goal of the season) scored the final goal of the opening frame.
SECOND QUARTER | 14-2, CLEMSON
Clemson continued to heat up in the second stanza, scoring eight straight goals while not allowing the Golden Bears to score. Regan Byrne scored four of the Tigers' first six goals (27 goals on the year). Kayla Macleod (20th goal of the season), Aubrie Eisfeld (24th goal of the season), Goldstein (second goal of the day, 27th goal of the season) and Anna Brown (11th goal of the year) all scored for the Tigers. The second quarter marked the sixth frame of the year that Clemson has held its opponent to zero goals.
THIRD QUARTER | 17-2, CLEMSON
In the third frame, the Tigers' defense held the Golden Bears scoreless for the second straight period and seventh quarter of the year. The first six minutes of action saw goals from Goldstein, Teagan Scott (free position goal), and Jasmine Stanton (8th goal of the season). The remaining nine minutes of action were scoreless on both sides.
FOURTH QUARTER | 17-8, CLEMSON
The Golden Bears scored five straight goals in the fourth and final stanza to trim the Tigers' advantage to nine points. Five different Cal. performers found the net in the final frame of the night.
