CLEMSON, S.C. - The Clemson Tigers completed the upset sweep over the No. 18/23 Virginia Cavaliers with a 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon at McWhorter Stadium. The Tiger offense was led by home runs from junior Kiley Channell and sophomore Taylor Pipkins, along with RBIs from freshman Mac Pavese and sophomore Macey Cintron. Clemson improved to 30-17 overall (12-9 ACC) with the win, while the Cavaliers dropped to 10-10 in conference play (33-11 overall).
The Tigers got things started right away, scoring two in the bottom of the first. Senior Jamison Brockenbrough got hit by a pitch to begin the inning and headed to second on a sac bunt by Channell. Pavese doubled to score Brockenbrough from second, which was followed quickly by a Cintron RBI single that scored Pavese to give the Tigers the two-run advantage heading to the second inning.
Clemson’s offense continued rolling in the bottom of the second with a Corri Hicks walk, and she advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Pipkins launched a 217-foot home run to left center to score two and give the Tigers the 4-0 lead. It was her seventh home run of the season and sixth in the last nine games.
The Cavaliers got in the run column with a solo home run in the top of third inning, but Clemson’s Channell quickly answered with a solo home run of her own to lead off the bottom half of the inning and to extend the lead to 5-1.
The Tigers continued to extend the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Breaux started things off with a double that was followed by a pair of walks to Hicks and Pipkins to load the bases with one out. Channell continued her big day at the plate with an RBI single to right field that scored pinch runner Kennedy Ariail from third to give the Tigers a 6-1 lead. That lead would hold steady for the remainder of the game.
Junior Sierra Maness pitched the complete game for the Tigers, striking out four to secure her 16th win of the season. Maness allowed only two hits and one earned run in her 31st appearance of the season.
