Syracuse, N.Y. - No. 24 Clemson Women’s Tennis (17-7, 7-5 ACC) topped Syracuse (7-12, 3-9 ACC) 4-1 in Syracuse, N.Y. to conclude the regular season and earn Head Coach Boomer Saia his 17th win of the season, the most regular season wins in the Saia era.
The Tigers started the match strong with Sophomores Artemis Aslanisvili and Sophie Clayton taking their match 6-4 over Leena Bennetto and Constance Levivier on court three. The pair of Sophomore Talia Neilson-Gatenby and Senior Romana Cisovska earned the doubles point with a 7-6 (1) win on court two over Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik. The No. 42 pair of Senior Jade Groena and Freshman Rinon Okuwaki wrapped up the doubles sweep with a 7-6 (4) win over Anastasia Sysoeva and Nelly Knezkova on court one.
Clemson headed into singles play with all the momentum, up 1-0 over Syracuse. The Orangemen tied up the match 1-1 after Emma Scaldalai took the match over Clayton 6-0, 6-2. The Tigers regained their lead with help from Neilson-Gatenby on court four taking her match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 over Monika Wojcik. Aslanisvili earned Clemson its third point of the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win over Leena Bennetto on court five. Clemson needed one more singles win to claim the victory over Syracuse and it all came down to Groen and Okuwaki to determine the match. Okuwaki clinched the win for the Tigers after coming back from a one set deficit and taking the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Serafima Shastova on court two. At the time of clinch, Groen led Anastasia Sysoeva 0-6, 6-3, 5-4 and Nelly Knezkova led Cisovska 7-6, 1-6, 2-1.
UP NEXT: The Tigers head to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Championships that will begin on April 14th. The ACC Championship seeding will be announced after the final match at 1 p.m. today.
