PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Senior Jamison Brockenbrough, sophomores Corri Hicks and Taylor Pipkins and freshman Sarah Breaux all hit multi-run homers as the Clemson Tigers claimed the series at Pitt with an 11-7 win on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Clemson improved to 27-16 (9-9 ACC), while Pitt fell to 21-20, 7-11 ACC).
Clemson strung together nine total hits, including the four home runs. Sophomore Marian Collins finished the day with two hits, including a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Breaux led the team with three RBIs, while Pipkins, Hicks and Brockenbrough all picked up two RBIs. 10 different Tigers scored a run with Pipkins leading the way with two.
The Tigers jumped ahead in the first inning with a two-out rally. After Pavese and Cintron got on base after earning walks, Collins doubled to right center and scored both runners. Hicks followed, hitting her ninth home run of the season to increase Clemson’s 4-0 lead.
In the second, Kylee Johnson found first base after singling to left field. Pipkins then hammered a ball over the center field wall, marking her fifth-straight game with a home run.
Pitt scored three in the bottom of the inning, two off of a throwing error and another from a wild pitch. The Panthers added an additional run to the board off of a bases-loaded walk in the third to cut Clemson’s advantage down to 6-4.
After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Collins started Clemson off at bat with a single in the sixth. Sam Minish singled to deep center field, advancing pinch runner Sarah Rocheleau to third. With runners on the corners, Sarah Breaux hit the Tigers’ third homer of the day, extending their lead 9-4. Three batters later, Brockenbrough matched the feat with a home run of her own, scoring herself and Pipkins who had walked.
The Panthers notched a home run of their own in the bottom of the inning and plated an additional runner off of a single towards left field. They tallied an additional run later in the inning off of a single that plated a runner from second. The score was 11-7 after six which held for the final inning to give Clemson the win.
Junior Sierra Maness got her second start of the weekend in the circle. She pitched two innings with five strikeouts before being replaced. Cintron pitched the next three innings and notched two strikeouts to earn her second-straight victory in the circle and improve to 2-0 on the year. Graduate Abby Dunning pitched the final two frames and struck out three in her outing.
