CLEMSON, S.C. — Lucas Augustsson shot a three-under-par 69 and finished third individually, leading Clemson to a tie for fourth place out of 15 teams at The Hootie college golf tournament at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Augustsson’s round tied for the second best of the day out of the 83 players who competed in weather conditions that included 25 miles per hour wind. The average score was 74.31, up from a 71.90 stroke average for the field in Monday’s second round when winds were calm.

Charleston, the host school, won the tournament with a score of 35-under-par 829, while South Carolina was second at 29-under par. Kansas was third at 19 under, while Clemson and Purdue tied for fourth at 16-under-par. Chattanooga and Florida Gulf Coast tied for sixth at 11 under.

Clemson posted a 10-3-1 record against the field for the tournament and now has a 65-50-3 record  with two tournaments remaining, the Mountaineer Invitational in Bridgeport, WV April 13-14 and the ACC Tournament in Panama City, FL April 23-27.

It was the best tournament of the spring for Augustsson who had rounds of 66-71-69 for a 10-under-par score of 206 for 54 holes. He finished just two shots off the lead as he had 15 birdies and an eagle for the three rounds. His third place finish tied for the best of his career and it was his best this year. He had consecutive seventh place finishes in the fall.

The senior averaged 4.40 on par five holes, second best in the field, and 2.87 on par three holes, third best. His 66 in the opening round was the third best in the field on Sunday and his 69 on Tuesday tied for the second best. Augustsson’s 10-under par was the best of his career and his 206 total tied a career best.

Colin Salema contributed a two-under-par 70 on Tuesday to support Augustsson. He was one of just nine players in the field to score 70 or better for the round. After an opening round 78, Salema was Clemson’s best player over the last 36 holes with scores of 69-70.   He finished 36th for the 54 holes with a 217 score. He had 12 birdies for the tournament, second among Clemson golfers and the most he has had in a tournament in his Clemson career.

Thomas Higgins was Clemson’s second best golfer for the event with an even-par 216.  The senior had scores of 71 and 69 for the first two rounds, then had a 76 on Tuesday to finish tied for 30th.  He had nine birdies and  scored a  4.60 stroke average on par five holes. He was a big reason Clemson tied for first in scoring on the par five holes as a team with a 30-under-par aggregate.

Oscar Bredkjaer, Clemson’s stroke average leader entering the tournament had a 75 on Tuesday and finished at five-over-par 221 for the tournament.

Rich Wills was four under par through 36 holes, but he had an 80 in the final round to finish at 220 for the event, good enough for 53rd.

Freshman Samuel Duran played the event as an individual and finished with a 239 total.
