CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 9/10 Clemson (7-4, 3-3 ACC) returns home after a three-game road stint to face the Wofford Terriers (2-6) at Conklin field on Monday evening for a 6 p.m. matchup.
Clemson owns a 2-0 record against Wofford, scoring 23 goals in each game. The Terriers were the first team Clemson ever faced on Feb. 11, 2023 at Historic Riggs Field where the Tigers won 23-1. The two programs met 13 months later to the day at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. with Clemson coming away with a 32-4 victory. The Terriers are 2-6 on the season, picking up wins against New Haven and, most recently, Butler. Wofford’s six losses came in a pair of three-game losing streaks, first to open the season against Davidson, Cincinnati and Le Moyne, and then again to Kennesaw, Campbell and Massachusetts following the New Haven Victory.
A PUSH FOR THE TEWAARATON
The Tewaaraton Award is given to the top male and female American college lacrosse players across all NCAA divisions, the Heisman of collegiate lacrosse if you will. The preseason watchlist featured Kayla MacLeod and Natalie Shurtleff. With an updated watchlist soon to be released, below are season updates on MacLeod and Shurtleff, along with a list of others who are deserving to be featured.
MacLeod | Attack | Junior
After coming off a devastating, season-ending injury from last year, MacLeod has worked her way back into action. In the season opener against Vanderbilt, she scored two goals and went on to net seven more leading into yesterday’s game against No. 24/25 Pittsburgh. Against Pitt, she appeared true to form securing a season-high three goals.
Shurtleff | Midfield | Junior
In 11 games this season, Shurtleff has come away with 35 points from 24 goals and 11 assists, while also earning 38 draw controls. She has proven herself in rising to the occasion after scoring a single-game high seven goals against No. 10/12 Florida and five goals against Pitt, including a fourth-quarter hat trick in a span of five minutes to propel the Tigers past the Panthers.
Teagan Scott | Defender | Freshman
Scott has made just as much of an impact that Spallina has, just on the defensive side of things. In just three games, she shattered the freshman record for caused turnovers, following her 10 CTO game (Clemson single-game record) against No. 4/5 Stanford. Scott has recorded a caused turnover in every game this season, having multiple in every game except Vanderbilt. She currently sits at 40 CTOs this season which tops the nation and is No. 2 in the NCAA (No. 1 ACC) with an average of 3.55 caused turnovers per game. Scott is also picking up ground balls at a rate of 3.09 per game, ranking top 20 in the NCAA and third in the ACC.
Scott secured the IWLCA Division I and ACC Weekly Defensive Player of the Week Awards in the same week twice this season. She secured her first round of awards on Feb. 17 for the 13 CTOs and five GBs she had between the Furman and Stanford games, and the second round came last week (3/17) after causing six turnovers and picking up seven GBs against No. 21/21 Virginia on March 14.
Scott was named the No. 1 ranked impact freshman on ILWomen’s Power Rankings.
Alexa Spallina | Attack | Freshman
The former No. 1 overall recruit has not disappointed in her freshman campaign, shattering records for Clemson. Right out of the gate against Vanderbilt, she mustered a seven-point game from two goals and five assists which tied for fourth on Clemson’s all-time single-game points list at the time. Since then, she has raised the bar and knocked herself off the list due to making an appearance three more times. In her second-career game, she tallied 10 points against Furman (scoring six goals and four assists), good for the most in a single game in Clemson history. Against Mercer last week, she followed up that performance with a nine-point game (three goals, six assists) to tie for second on the list. Exactly one month prior to her Mercer performance, she had eight points against Queens from one goal and seven assists.
Spallina is on the verge of setting both the freshman and school single season assists record, currently having 39 on the year. She trails teammate Brooke Goldstein who set the mark of 42 last year. In just 11 games, Spallina has shot up the leaderboard in career assists for Clemson. She sits in third, on pace to surpass Goldstein and Shurtleff, who are tied at 52. On Clemson’s All-Time Single-Game Assists List, Spallina secures the top three performances with seven (Queens, 2/17), six (Mercer, 3/17) and five (Pittsburgh, 3/21).
Recently, Spallina was ranked No. 4 on ILWomen’s Freshman Power Rankings.
Emma Penczek | Midfield | Freshman
Penczek came in as the No. 2 overall recruit, behind Spallina, in this previous class. Like Spallina, Penczek has been a force, with Penczek making her impact on both sides of the ball as a midfielder. So far on the season she has 27 points (15 goals, 12 assists), 26 ground balls, 22 caused turnovers and 14 draw controls.
Penczek is averaging two caused turnovers per game which ranks 30th nationally and is sixth in the ACC. She is also ranks sixth in the ACC for ground balls per game, picking up 2.36 on average. Her season-high six ground balls occurred against No. 6/7 Notre Dame. Against Vanderbilt in the season opener, Penczek caused five turnovers, picked up three ground balls, scored twice and was responsible for an assist. She had another five CTO game last week against Mercer, where she also collected three points (two goals, one assist) and picked up three ground balls. In the seven games that she has scored, six have been multiple goal games, with her season high being a hat trick, which she hit twice (Furman and Virginia).
Penczek slid into the sixth spot on ILWomen’s Freshman Power Rankings.
