CLEMSON, S.C. — Lucas Augustsson fired a six-under-par 66 and Rich Wills added a bogey free 68 to lead Clemson to an 11-under-par team score of 277 and a fifth place standing after the first round of The Hootie Collegiate at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The Tigers are tied for fifth with Coastal Carolina after 18 holes. Charleston, the host school, has the team lead after an opening round 23-under-par score of 265. Kansas is second at 18-under-par, while South Carolina its third at 13-under-par. Purdue is fourth at 12-under. The 15-team field will play the second round of the 54-hole event on Monday with the final round on Tuesday.
Augustsson stands in fourth place in the individual race after his 66 that included seven birdies and just one bogey. It was Augustsson’s second best round of the year, trailing only a second round 64 at The Brothers Collegiate in September. His seven birdies on Sunday tied for second best in the field. He played the par five holes at four under, third best in the field.
Wills round of 68 was his first bogey free round of the year. He had a three-under-par 34 on the front side and a one-under-par on the back. It was Wills fourth round in the 60s this year and all four have been in opening rounds. He stands in 11th place after the first round.
Senior Thomas Higgins was a third Tiger to score under par in the first round. His one-under 71 included three birdies and two bogeys. He was even par over the last six holes. For Higgins it was the 23rd under-par round of his Clemson career, best among active Tigers.
Oscar Bredkjaer shot an even-par round of 72, his 10th round of par or better this year. The junior transfer from San Francisco started the round with a double bogey and shot 39 on the front nine. But, he shot a 33 on the back side. The key to his round was a 2.6 average on the par three holes. tied for the best in the 84-player field.
Sophomore Colin Salema had an opening round 78 and his score did not count towards the team score. Freshman Samuel Duran is playing the event as an individual and he also shot a 78.
